60's FASHION TRENDS FOR WOMEN!

 * quick disclaimer: I'm just picking some of the most prominent/ interesting trends from each decade, I am not claiming that these are all of the trends from each decade. *

1960s:

Womens fashion trends change all the time. However, one thing that stood out to me in the 60's was that Women predominantly wore dresses, and those dresses were bold. Jumper dresses and split panel dresses were also no stranger to the decade.

Upon research, I found that 60's fashion was heavily influenced by pop art. This meant the more you could slap onto a dress, the better! We cant forget the polka dots, they also seemed to make an appearance in almost every outfit.

Skirts were also of similar colours and patterns, however seemed to be slightly more mature looking than the rag-doll-like dresses that were a trend. The biggest trends seemed to be knee length, not very tight skirts. Block colours or tartan print dominated the skirt scene.

Upon first glance, the internet pushes the idea of all womens trousers in the 60's being the multicolored, crazy flared trousers. This idea mainly comes from what we see in stereotypical costumes and media. To me, these scream 70's.

However, once I delved a little deeper into 60's trousers, I found that block colour cigarette trousers were also a huge trend. These are very business-esque and formal, but the bold colours make them extremely fun and sassy at the same time.

Tie dye was also extremely popular in the sixties. To tie dye is to 'produce patterns in (a garment or piece of cloth) by tying parts of it to shield it from the dye.' This creates a fun unique print and also goes along with the experimenting in patterns and colours that is evident throughout the decade. Once again, something that is very stereotypical of the time period in relation to fashion.

60's shoes were a bit harder to define as there seemed to be a lot of fashion trends. However, a patent leather look seemed to shine through (literally) and white, brown and orange/yellow also seemed to      be included in various outfits. The shoes often had a kitten heel or    a small block heel and knee high was a trend. Whether the boots      themselves were knee high or socks were added to add a knee          high effect, the trend seemed to be an extremely popular one.

Although there were plenty of fashion icons throughout the sixties, in my opinion, Twiggy comes hand in hand with sixties fashion. She was a huge icon throughout the decade and is continuously celebrated for the ways in which she shaped fashion. Her short hair cut and easily distinguishable makeup made her stand out from a crowd of brightly dressed
  individuals.

How has 60's fashion effected our fashion today?

The sixties seemed to be the decade that brought the rays of beautiful, bright colours into fashion and we can safely say, they did it un-apologetically. Bright colours are a huge trend in 2017, especially bright pinks and yellows. However, as it seemed to be a norm to go out in super bright colours in the 60's, it is a bold statement to make today.. bold but not frowned upon. In todays fashion, it is trendy to pair a brightly coloured jumper or tshirt with a muted pair of jeans.

Tie dye is also still extremely popular today. Many brands utilise the pattern and brands such as 'hype' are well known to spread it across a wide range of items such as hoodies, tshirts and backpacks. Tie dye has sparked so much interest that there are millions of D.I.Y tie dye tutorials all over the internet. We even made tie dye shirts in a design&tech lesson    when I was still in school.

Twiggy's makeup style has had a huge impact on how we do our makeup today as she popularized the 'heavy eye look'. To use eye makeup as the main focal point in a look is one of the most popular worldwide trends in 2017. This will either be to make the eyes
smokey and heavy or to make them look big and wide, or better yet..both!
Twiggy (left) definitely kick-started the big eye trend and we are still loving it to this day. Celebrities such as Adele (right) use this kind of thing as their signature look and, much like the tie dye trend, you will find endless tutorials on YouTube under 'how to get big, bold eyes.'

In 2014, Worldwide superstar Ariana grande released her music video for the single 'Problem ft Iggy Azalea'. The video was celebrated for its sixties vibe and Ariana has kept the sixties trends in her outfits every so often since then. Now when I say these outfits are sixties inspired... I really mean it.

She nails the shift dress style, the patent leather look we discussed earlier and those oh so amazing knee high boots. All whilst adding a modern spin with the hairstyle and the crop top and matching skirt trend.

So thanks for reading, everyone! I really hope you enjoyed this post as it was absolutely one of my favourites to write. Let me know what your favourite trend was or if I missed one that you love from the sixties.
I will be doing other posts just like this for every decade up until now. So make sure to look out for our 70's inspired post next. Comment below the trends you would like to see in that one.
